So.....I took the opportunity to make mental notice of my media consumption over the past 12 hours and what I found out about myself was quite interesting.
Drawn to my laptop screen, online TV series are my entertainment mode of choice, thus the drama of Grey's Anatomy, the suspense of Switched At Birth and the hopeless romance in the chic flick 90210 had my full attention for the past few hours.
So what? you make ask............its amazing how the shows we choose to consume religiously have in many cases a ridiculous message which we never question. Take for instance 90210, it has a wide fan base with a higher concentration of fans being teens
as the show is based around the glitz and glamour, the drama, the one night
stands and the relationships that are thought to last forever, the joys,
burdens, trials and triumphs that come with being seventeen, rich and residing
in Beverly Hills.
How on earth can I draw any kind of relation to that show ...........it's amazing how I can even stand to watch a program that highlights the sexual prowess of rich teenagers. Am I in turn saying that it's okay to sexually objectify teen girls because the story line is compelling ?? Have you ever been conscious of the media you choose to consume ?? If so, how has it shaped you understanding of the world ?
Would love to hear you view !!
Nice read :) I ask myself that all the time
ReplyDeletethanks for taking the time 2 read !
ReplyDeleteI am a bit particular about the music I listen to. I guess for some we are so taken in, that until something very juicy happens or until we are put in a scenario to question what we watch or listen to then we become aware.sometimes its for gratification purposes and also certain things we view sends out mixed msgs ,so if we are not aware we go with the status which is what is wanted. consider though the many ads and movies that portray the sexy side(if you wanna put it so)of women.so we have a certain type of women that is expected for pageants and certain roles in movies and it leads to women trying to fit in that mould and showing that they are not comfortable in their own body.truly though there are many media stuff i succumb to and wonder why.
ReplyDeletepoints duly noted ....its all about please the public in a world where sex sells ! Sad ...but true !
ReplyDeleteI was actually thinking about that today myself. i catch myself watching some shows that are total contradictions to what i believe in as a Christian and as an individual. Pretty Little Liars is one of my favs (TEEN show which in a nutshell positively highlights lying, homosexuality, teacher student relationships, n bullying) I am glued to my lappy every week like an addict watching not only PLL but Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Desperate Housewives and recently....Dance moms.....I dont even know the connection between these tv shows but i can tell you this....i am not in my best moods if i miss an episode or worse yet if i cant find a proper link online to stream it from......maybe you could dig deeper into this "addiction" of ours and find the reason for the need for our weekly "fix"
ReplyDeletei appreciate that u took the time to respond.....and yes i totally share your sentiments and looking into this type of agenda setting that all have us under a similar spell can very well be a good final project to work on !!
ReplyDeleteBlessings :)
